There is no shortage of skin treatment methods designed to turn back the clock on the signs of aging and improve the appearance of skin. Both Dysport and Botox fall under this category, as two non-invasive skin treatments that work by relaxing the face’s muscles, inhibiting their ability to contract, as such minimizing wrinkle-producing movement.
For example, squinting causes crow’s feet, while frowning and eyebrow-raising lead to forehead lines. By blocking the muscles ability to perform these facial expressions, the skin above is smoothened. However, despite following much the same application and producing similar results, there are some differences between Botox and Dysport which we will delve into below.
Botox vs. Dysport
Botox and Dysport injections are both derived from the same neurotoxin, known as Botulinum Toxin.
Known for its ability to prevent facial contractions, Botulinum Toxin is used widely throughout the medical industry, most notably to prevent facial spasms.
Both Botox and Dysport are similar in applications and results.
However, there are some minor differences between the two cosmetic injections.
As an example, both treatments share the same primary active ingredient, but their trace protein amounts tend to vary.
Botox was first approved by the FDA in 1989 and gradually gained popularity as a ground breaking, minimally invasive skin treatment procedure that produced long-lasting, instantly noticeable results. These days, over six million people make use of Botox with varying motivations every year. Vita Cosmetic & Laser clinic is the leading provider of Botox in Toronto.
In comparison, Dysport is a relative newcomer on the scene, only being approved as of 2009. Dysport is solely owned and marketed by a cosmetic company known as Galderma.
Let's Take a Look At Botox
Botox is an injectable mix of chemicals and proteins that can be used for cosmetic or medical purposes. Regardless of the reason for use, botox is injected directly into the facial muscles, where it sends signals to the brain, signaling it to stop contractions in the injected muscles.
Since the facial muscles can no longer contract, they relax, smoothing out the surface skin above them and reducing the appearance of wrinkles, crow’s feet, and other such imperfections in the process. While the effect produced is only temporary, botox can also be considered a preventative treatment as it slows the formation of wrinkles.
Advantages of Botox Treatments
Botox treatments feature some convenient perks that include:
- Completely FDA-approved.
- Minimally invasive.
- Sessions can last only a few minutes.
- Suitable for treating the sensitive region surrounding the eyes.
- Requires zero downtime.
How Does Botox Work?
When you frown, squint, smile or make any facial expressions, your nerves produce a neurotransmitter known as acetylcholine.
This neurotransmitter is what causes your muscles to contract. Botox, once injected, essentially latches onto these neurotransmitters, turning off their ability to signal in the process.
Botox is the ideal treatment for both “dynamic” and “static” wrinkles as it works to relax the muscle and smoothen the skin.
When Do Results of Botox Become Noticeable?
Typically, Botox injections begin to work about 2 days after administration. You can expect to see results after 7-12 days.
If a proper aftercare routine is followed, the anti-aging effects of Botox can last for 3-6 months. However, over time, the efficacy of the injection gradually wears off as the muscles in the treated area return to regular activity.
Risks and Possible Side Effects of Botox Injections
Due to its minimally invasive application, Botox is a skin procedure that only has a number of minor risks.
The primary side effects that may be experienced include:
- Headache
- Mild pain at the area of injection
- Flu-like symptoms
- Drooping eyelids or eyebrows
Cost of Botox Injections in Toronto
Botox injections in Toronto are sold on a per-unit basis. Units are generally priced between $10-20 depending on the clinic and its location. Considering that several injections are administered in each session, the total cost of botox generally amounts to $350 to $1,000 for each treatment area.
That said, the price is subject to variables such as:
• Size of the treatment area.
• Location.
• Medical aesthetic clinic provider.
While Botox costs are not covered by insurance, your cosmetic injector can should be able to help you with structuring a payment plan that’s manageable for your budget.

Let's Take A Look At Dysport
Dysport is a skin treatment method that, much like botox, works by paralyzing the muscles in the face. Like Botox treatments, Dysport also uses Botulinum type A to prevent muscle contraction and movement.
Dysport treatments are a fantastic way to reduce the overall appearance of fine lines and wrinkles that affect the facial area. Cosmetic injections are administered by a needle that’s used to pierce the skin before reaching the underlying muscle. There, the contents of the injection are released.
How Does Dysport Work?
Wrinkles and frown lines are caused by repeated movements and muscle contractions that lead to the weakening of the skin over time. This pairs with a drop in the level of collagen in the skin, which causes wrinkles to deepen. Dysport works by reducing muscle activity, leading to a smoother, less wrinkled appearance of the skin.
Typically, you can expect to see Dysport results two to four days after administering your injections. However, much like botox, it can take over a week or two to see noticeable results.
Dysport Treatment
Prior to your Dysport treatment, your cosmetic injector will evaluate your physical health. If you pass their quick evaluation, the injection process will often happen directly in your doctor’s office after they’ve prepared the necessary setup.
Before you are injected with Dysport, the practitioner will usually apply a mild, topical numbing cream to the area that’s going to be treated, ensuring your feel little to no pain throughout the procedure.
Following Dysport treatment, that’s to its minimally invasive nature; you can continue on your day as normal.
Eligibility for Dysport Treatment
Before undergoing Dysport, it’s best to consult your cosmetic injector or medical aesthetician to determine if you are indeed eligible for Dysport treatments.
Signs you should avoid Dysport treatment:
• You are allergic to Dysport.
• You are allergic to the protein found in cow’s milk.
• Have or have recently had any infections in the area to be treated.
• Have inflammation or irritation of any kind in the affected area.
• Have oily or sensitive skin.
• Have had surgical work done on your face.
• Have significant facial scarring.
• Are on certain medications that are incompatible with Dysport.
What Is The Cost of Dysport?
Much like Botox, Dysport is priced on a per-unit basis. However, the price of Dysport is significantly lower than Botox per unit, making Dysport a far cheaper treatment alternative.
While the cost of Dysport ranges from clinic to clinic, you can expect to pay in the price range of $325 to $425.
Botox vs. Dysport: Similarities
Both Botox and Dysport are similar in that they work by relaxing underlying facial muscles, leaving them unable to contract – essentially paralyzing the treated area. Both treatment options block the nerves from sending signals to muscles, with the resulting loss of muscle movement causing a reduction in the appearance of wrinkles, fine lines, and other signs of aging.
The result of the two treatment options are also temporary. After several months, the effects wear off, and nerve impulses start to reach the target muscles again, meaning they can move and contract freely again.
When this happens, fine lines and wrinkles appear once again. However, results can be maintained through a series of regular, periodic injections.
Botox vs. Dysport: Differences
Even though these two products share similar outcomes, they also have some underlying differences that set them apart, the most notable being:
Dilution levels: Dysport is more diluted than Botox, which means you often need to undergo more Dysport treatments to achieve the same results as Botox. Considering the lower cost of Dysport, the cost-to-effect ratio balances out in the end.
Diffusion: When it comes to diffusion, Dysport comes out on top. Upon injection, its solution can spread over a wide area due to its small molecule size. This means that Dysport is more useful when targeting larger affected areas. However, on the other hand, it also means smaller areas cannot be treated with equal precision as Botox.
Molecule Size: Dysport solution contains smaller molecules than that of Botox, meaning it can enter the system and produce results faster. This is an advantage for some treatment areas but not so much for others. Be sure to consult your cosmetic surgeon before deciding which treatment is right for you.
Onset: Dysport gets to work on the treated area faster than Botox, reducing the signs of aging in only 24 hours. For Botox, you can expect to wait 72 hours before seeing any positive effects of the treatments fully form.
Is Botox Better or Dysport? Botox Wins!
While Botox and Dysport are similar in many ways, they set themselves apart in terms of price, dissolution, molecule size, and onset time.
Dysport’s small molecule size allows it to treat a more expansive treatment area, while Botox is more suited to precision.
Dysport is also cheaper than Botox per unit, but each unit is less potent, meaning more sessions will need to be undertaken.
